MMTV DNA sequences have also been used to direct the expression of transforming genes to mammary cells in transgenic mice, and a number of mouse models of breast cancer caused by different oncogenes have been created (Cardiff and Muller, 1993).
One possible mechanism by which this occurs is at the level of transcription. , 1985; King and Corley, 1990). Stimulation of T cells by Sag or B cells by T-cell cytokines may also increase viral RNA synthesis through the same pathways as Ips. For example, if virus transcription in C3HMeJ mice is lower than in C3WHeN mice, decreased virion production would result. As a result, C3HMeJ would be less infected than C3WHeN mice and develop fewer mammary tumors. It is not known, however, whether all MMTVs, including the exogenous viruses such as MMTV(C3H), are transcriptionally regulated by Ips or what DNA sequences within Mtv9 confer Ips responsiveness.
